Tyler Gerald Burrell was born on August 22, 1967, in Grants Pass, Oregon. His parents are Sheri Rose (née Hauck), a teacher, and Gary Gerald Burrell, a family therapist.

He has a younger brother named Duncan. Burrell has English and German heritage, but he discovered through the show “Finding Your Roots” that he also has African heritage. His four-times great-grandmother, who was formerly enslaved and later became a homesteader in Oregon, was an African.

Burrell grew up in Applegate, Oregon, near the California border, and attended Hidden Valley High School in Grants Pass. During high school, he played football as a lineman for the Hidden Valley Mustangs.

Burrell enrolled at the University of Oregon, where he became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and worked as a bartender at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He later transferred to Southern Oregon University in Ashland and graduated in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in theatre arts.

In 2008, he had the honour of being the commencement speaker at his alma mater. Burrell obtained an MFA at Penn State University. While studying for his master’s, he was a member of the Theatre 100 Company alongside Keegan-Michael Key.

In the same year, he was the curator of the White House in the film National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Burrell also starred in the sitcom, Back to You” on Fox in 2007, playing the role of a field reporter. The show was, however, cancelled in 2008.

Burrell played the character “Phil Dunphy” in the highly acclaimed ABC sitcom Modern Family. His performance earned him numerous accolades, including eight consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” from 2010 to 2017. He won the award twice in 2011 and 2014.

The actor also received nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Award for “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series” and shared the Screen Actors Guild Award for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series” with his co-stars. Ty Burrell tied the knot with Holly Burrell on August 18, 2000. The couple initially resided in New York City and later moved to Salt Lake City in 2008. The couple subsequently rented its two-bedroom apartment in the Astoria neighbourhood of New York. Their lives took them to Southern California for a period when Burrell was working on Modern Family. In March 2010, the couple announced the adoption of a baby girl, followed by the adoption of another girl two years later.

Burrell is an ardent fan of various sports teams, including the Oregon Ducks, Portland Trail Blazers, New York Mets, and Los Angeles Rams.

The actor has also ventured into the restaurant business. He is the owner of The Eating Establishment, a popular restaurant located in Park City, Utah. Additionally, he owns two adjoining bars in Salt Lake City, aptly named Bar X and Beer Bar, which boast interconnecting doors and offer patrons a unique experience.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck and brought about the temporary closure of bars and restaurants in Salt Lake City in March 2020, Burrell and his wife sprang into action to support those affected in the local community. They contributed $100,000 of their funds to create Tip Your Server, an online crowd-sourced fund designed to provide financial aid to the out-of-work wait staff in Utah, where they maintained their primary residence at the time.
