Palia How to Fish
Fishing Guide for Beginners
Step 1: Get yourself in front of some water
Not all water is fishable, it needs to be a bit deep.
You don’t have to fish at one of the bubbling spots. Those just give you Star quality fish.
Step 2: Get your rod out
Hold R, mouse over the fishing rod, and release.
Step 3: Hold the left mouse button to cast your line
A pulsating circle over the water shows you where your bobber will land.
Step 4: Wait for a fish to bite, and when a fish bites, click left mouse button
The pattern: the bobber will bob and make a sploosh sound three times, then a fish will bite.
If you click too early or late, you miss the fish and have to wait again.
- Pro Tip: Missing the fish by clicking too early or too late does not consume bait.
- Pro Tip: When the fish bites, you can see what type of fish is biting. You can save bait by ignoring it and pulling your bobber out of the water when it’s gone.
Step 5: Hold left click to reel the fish in
You have a “health bar” while you reel (at the bottom of the screen).
The fish will escape if your health runs out.
To keep your health from depleting, you have to keep the bobber within the ( ) brackets.
The brackets are green when the bobber is inside them, and red when the bobber is outside.
Fish move side to side and can jump out of the water while you reel. Keep the fish in the brackets, and don’t reel when they jump!

Fishing Tips & Tricks
How to Save Bait
If you fail the fishing mini-game by letting your health bar run out, you LOSE the bait you used.
If you miss a fish when it bites by clicking too early or too late, you KEEP the bait you used.
When a fish bites it becomes visible for a moment, giving you a chance to see what it is. If you don’t want that fish, you can ignore it and click the reel button after it swims away. You can then cast again without having wasted your bait.
- Leaving your bobber in the water will only result in the same fish biting over and over.
- You have to recast to catch a new type of fish.
- This strategy decreases tool durability. Keep an eye on your fishing rod.
Making Money
- The most profitable locations are Bahari Coast and Ponds.
- The most profitable bait is the Glow Worm.
- Star Quality fish are 1.5 times (rounded down) more valuable than normal quality fish.
- It’s always more profitable to use worms than no bait at all, even if you’re buying the worms from Zeki.
- It’s always more profitable to turn your fish into a Fish Dish*, even Star Quality.
*Fish Dish = Fish Stew, Sashimi, Sushi, Trout Dinner, Bouillabasse, or Fried Catfish Dinner. NOT Grilled Fish.
Making Money: Where to Fish
Taking the value of fish and their rarity into account, the most profitable places to fish are:
- Bahari Coast during the Day
- Kilima Lake at Night
- Caves during Dawn and Dusk
When to Grill Fish
Don’t have the Sashimi recipe yet, but still want to get more value out of your fish? Always grill your normal quality fish!
NQ = Normal Quality
SQ = Star Quality
- NQ Grilled Fish gains the summed NQ values of both fish used, even if the fish used were SQ.
- SQ Grilled Fish gains the summed SQ values of both fish used, even if the fish used were NQ.
- Using SQ fish increases the chance of making SQ Grilled Fish, but does not guarantee it.
- Fish in your inventory get used before fish in storage, from left to right starting on the first hotbar.
Never Miss Bubble Spots!
Start your cast until it’s at max cast distance, then move your player until the landing spot is over the bubble spot. This takes the timing/skill out of having to hit the bubble spot.
