The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth The Cleaver Setup Guide
Quick Guide to The Cleaver Setup
Break the game. Exhaust the secret room pool. You’ll want to look for Death Certificate, D Infinity, Red Key, Forget Me Now, Esau Jr and Strawman. If you’ve already used Death Certificate, you’ll have to get it back later with Bag of Crafting. Glitched Crown is NOT recommended unless you absolutely need it to continue the break. Echo Chamber is also not recommended, as it may cause issues later on.
- Once Strawman shows up, transfer its pedestal to a different room with Moving Box. If you don’t have Moving Box yet, move to the other secret room and continue rerolling items there.
- If you don’t have access to a shop, look for a red shop with Red Key. If you still don’t have one after clearing a 13×13, you’ll have to take Chaos when it shows up, although this should be considered a last resort as it makes finding specific items much harder.
- You can use Clear Rune + Soul of Cain as an alternative to Red Key, although this requires you to carry Soul of Cain the entire time you’re 13x13ing.
Exhaust the shop pool. The only items you absolutely need are Diplopia, Schoolbag, Habit and The Battery, although you’ll most likely want Sharp Plug, Starter Deck, 9 Volt, Deep Pockets and Humbleing Bundle as well. Crooked Penny and Glowing Hourglass are optional, but can be used together as an alternative to Diplopia duping, so save them somewhere on the floor if you want.
- When Dull Razor shows up, move it to a different room if possible, but if this is inconvenient feel free to reroll it. You can get it back later with Death Certificate.
- The shop pool has many infinite-use actives, and you may want to save one of these for later, as they pair nicely with Butter. Some examples are The Jar, Jar of Flies and Remote Detonator.
- If you have Book of Virtues, you’ll want to save Deck of Cards somewhere, as it’ll allow you to acquire a ? card without D20. You can alternatively use D1, but this is slower as it forces you to pick up each special card to check what it is.
Move a trinket to an empty room and use D1 repeatedly until you have the Butter trinket. This will allow you to easily move actives around.
Next, you’ll need two ? cards. Using D20 repeatedly on a large amount of pickups is the fastest way to find one. Look for a Jera in the process, as you can simply dupe the first ? card with Jera instead of finding a second one. Once you have two ? cards, you’ll be able to dupe items and pickups with Diplopia infinitely.
- If you’re trying to reach max schwag, now is a good time to get it.
- If you have Crooked Penny and Glowing Hourglass, you can attempt to dupe the first ? card with them, although this is not guaranteed to work.
- If you’ve already used Death Certificate and need to get it back, look for a The Hierophant? card while D20ing. Once you’ve acquired the ? cards, you can dupe the Hierophant? card and craft another Death Certificate with the bone hearts. (You’ll need Bag of Crafting as well, which may take a while to find.)
- If Book of Virtues is preventing you from D20ing, use Deck of Cards to find a ? card. You can also use Deck of Cards to find a Hierophant? card if you need Death Certificate. If you still need a Jera at this point, use D1 repeatedly on a rune until it shows up.
Move Death Certificate to an empty room and dupe it a few times. The items you’ll want to take from the Death Certificate floor (assuming you don’t have any of them yet) are Void, Meat Cleaver and Yum Heart. If you’re missing any other important items, such as Dull Razor, now is a good time to get them. You may also want an infinite-use active if you don’t have one already.
Move Dull Razor to an empty room and dupe it until you have eight Dull Razors. You only need six of them, so move two of the copies somewhere else. After that, move Red Key, Meat Cleaver and Yum Heart to the room. Once you’re ready, void everything. You now have an infinite-use Void that can open red rooms, cleaver enemies and heal your strawmen. (If you plan on using Clear Rune with Soul of Cain, void that instead of Red Key.)
Return to the room with Strawman. If there are other items in the room, either pick them up (if they’re passives) or move them out of the room (if they’re actives). If there’s a passive that you can’t pick up, like TMTRAINER, keep using Soul of Isaac until the pedestal has cycled to either a harmless passive that you can pick up or an active that you can move out of the room. The fastest way to get a Soul of Isaac is by using D1 repeatedly on a rune, and you can dupe it afterwards just in case you need multiple copies. After you’ve isolated the Strawman pedestal, dupe it until you have 64 strawmen in the room.
This step is optional, but recommended. While clearing rooms with this setup, it’s possible to accidentally void unwanted actives, putting your run at risk. You can help avoid this by breakfasting as many item pools as possible. This can be quickly done by taking Glitched Crown and Chaos from Death Certificate and spamming D6 in a room with multiple pedestals until everything is breakfast. Note that rerolls with Chaos tend to ignore certain pools if there’s a small amount of items in them, so you may still see items even after doing this.
If you’re not already holding Void, pick it up. At this point, you’ll have to decide what you want to carry in your 2nd active slot.
- If you don’t want to use any FMNs, carry Esau Jr.
- If you plan on using FMNs, carry Moving Box with Esau Jr and however many FMNs you want (up to 9) inside it.
- If you plan on using more than 9 FMNs for whatever reason, carry Moving Box with Esau Jr, FMN, Diplopia, Butter, the two ? cards and your infinite-use active of choice inside it. This will allow you to dupe FMN infinitely, although the strawmen may make it difficult to do this.
Once you’re ready, return to the room with the strawmen and take up to 63 of them (62 if you’re J&E). You can take less than 63 if you’re worried about crashing. Make sure to let the strawmen pick each other up. This keeps them tightly clumped together. If you don’t do this, the strawmen will push each other around a lot, which could potentially activate 1-pip and 6-pip dice rooms as soon as you enter them.
You can start 13x13ing now. Enter a room, spam Void until everything is dead, and repeat. Be careful not to use Void in rooms with actives, be careful around dice rooms, and be careful not to enter error rooms. Always double check to make sure you have everything you need before leaving a floor or using FMN.
- Enemies that aren’t immediately vulnerable as soon as they spawn will take a while to kill with cleaver alone, and you should avoid using Void on these. Some examples are hosts, needles, wizoobs and mom’s hands.
- It’s unknown how high you can go with this setup before crashing. Anything above 5 million or so is risky, but 10 million has been achieved in a daily before, and it may be possible to go beyond that. Each 13×13 will give you around 1 million points (give or take a few hundred thousand), so keep that in mind when deciding how many floors to clear.
Once you’re satisfied with your score, kill the final boss of the run, use Esau Jr and touch the trophy.
Additional Notes
If you need a Strawman pedestal and happen to have him in your inventory, you can use a The Fool? card with Tarot Cloth to remove your most recent passive items, dropping him on the ground.
- If you picked up a large amount of passives after taking Strawman, you’ll need multiple Fool? uses. The easiest way to use the card multiple times is Blank Card, although you can simply dupe it instead if you’d like.
- This card with Tarot Cloth has been known to softlock people, as it usually spawns a lot of pedestals clumped together, trapping you if you get stuck in them. Make sure to hold a teleport active or card while doing this just in case.
- The only other way to get a Strawman pedestal is by blindly crafting him using Bag of Crafting. This is not recommended as it’s luck-based and will take a very long time.
D12 can reroll rocks into trapdoors, allowing you to go past the intended goal if you spawn a trapdoor on the final floor. You can also loop Chest and Dark Room using this method. If this is something you’re interested in doing, bring D Infinity, Blank Card and a The Tower? card with you inside Moving Box. This will allow you to spawn and reroll rocks infinitely.
- Keep in mind that poops, spikes, fireplaces, TNT and cobwebs will never reroll into trapdoors.
- The chances of a trapdoor spawning are very low, and it may take a while to get one, so you’ll need a lot of patience for this.
I sincerely hope this was helpful. Good luck to you!
